Darriel Davis Designs

Welcome to my shop!

A little about Darriel Davis Designs...I am a (mostly) self-taught artist with a love for all things fiber.  My shop features one-of-a-kind accessories that are "art to wear", and no two items are alike.

Darriel Davis Designs is the latest in a lifelong journey of exploring various fiber arts.  As a child, my mother and grandmothers taught me the basic fiber skills...sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidering, crosstitch...all of it!  Eventually I recognized my strengths in designing with color and texture , and I found felting in all its forms to be the perfect mode of expression.  I work in nuno felting, wet felting, needle felting and fiber art collage.  I focus on nuno felted scarves because they are a great way to convey my artistic process and an easy way for people who love color and texture to add wearable art to their wardrobe.  And because I love to sew as well as repurpose scraps and vintage fabrics, I occasionally stock the shop with decor and accessories created by using up my "stash".

A little about my materials...I select my materials for their quality and beauty.  I hand dye most of the silk for the scarves myself.  I source the wool roving from US suppliers when possible, and I especially like to use hand dyed wools from small farms, particularly for the variegated colors and merino and silk blends.  I am always on the look out for unique colorways at sheep and wool festivals, yarn shops and craft markets.

A little about my process...I love the serendipity of creating from colors and textures that evolve organically through the felting process.  My customers often enjoy learning about the process of nuno felting and the artistry behind each scarf, so here's a brief overview.  Nuno felting takes several hours.  I sandwich silk and various fibers between layers of wool roving that is arranged  in little "tufts".  This is wet down with soapy water and felted and fuilled through a process of rubbing and rolling.  Eventually the wool fibers migrate through the silk, creating the beautiful "new" fabric, which is rinsed, soaked and hung to dry.  I love seeing a row of newly felted scarves hanging on the clothesline in the sun!

Buyer is responsible for the cost of shipping to return an item for a refund or exchange.
