"I'm not the only one!"

by Geralyn Breig on 09 Jan, 2018

So, I’ve been mentioning my New Year's Resolution to family and friends and discovering that I’m not alone in my quest to buy more American-made products. We do it for slightly different reasons. My friend Sheila looks for unique items at crafts shows and street fairs because she thinks they’re more personal than mass market products. She’s a great person to ask if you need to buy a special gift. Her recent finds include these awesome 3-D dinosaur puzzles from Boneyard Pets (100 percent American-made in Brooklyn, New York) and Beekman’s all-natural COPA Soaps (handcrafted in Philadelphia, PA). Sheila especially likes the Avocado and Honey Oatmeal bars. My friend Rob will tell you that he looks for the “Made in USA” label whenever possible because he wants to help the environment. He likes the fact that they aren’t shipped from overseas. My brother-in-law, Brian, likes buying things that are American-made because it provides more jobs for people in America. My sister Maryellen scopes out tag sales because that’s where she can find vintage kitchenware and glassware from the days when they were actually made in the USA. (Yes, Mom’s stuff is cool again.)

As for me, it’s Week 2 and I’ve already made good on my Resolution! I’ve become a Fiesta fan. I bought these Fiesta dishes, bowls, and mugs, which come with a five-year warranty against chipping due to defects. (Yup, really!) They’re made by the Homer Laughlin China Company, at their plant in Newell, West Virginia — the same place where they’ve been making them since 1936. To be in business that long, I figure they must be doing something right. My new Fiestaware look so festive in my kitchen. I’m loving them.
